Ceramic coating maintenance schedule: a realistic UK calendar

The direct answer: wash every one to two weeks with proper technique, do a seasonal deep clean four times a year, and have the coating inspected annually. Ceramic coating reduces maintenance — it does not eliminate it. For what the coating is and why it needs care, see our ceramic coating guide.

TL;DR

The regular wash (every 1–2 weeks)

This is 90% of maintenance. The routine:

  1. Pre-rinse with a pressure washer or hose to remove loose grit.
  2. Snow foam, dwell, rinse — loosens road film without contact.
  3. Two-bucket wash with pH-neutral shampoo and a clean wash mitt, top to bottom.
  4. Rinse thoroughly.
  5. Dry with a plush microfibre towel or forced air — do not let it air-dry in sun.

On a coated car this takes noticeably less time than on bare paint, because contamination releases easily. That is the whole point of the coating — but only if you actually wash it.

Products: what to use and avoid

Use: pH-neutral shampoo, quality microfibre mitts and towels, iron fallout remover occasionally, a coating-safe maintenance spray approved by your installer.

Avoid: automatic brush car washes, traffic film removers used carelessly, strong alkaline cleaners, abrasive polishes or compounds, household washing-up liquid, and any "miracle" product not approved for your coating.

The maintenance habits that kill coatings

Annual inspection

A yearly check with your installer is good practice and, for some warranties, a requirement. They will assess water behaviour, check for bonded contamination, apply a maintenance topper if needed, and confirm the coating is performing. It is also your chance to ask about anything you have noticed — water behaviour changes, stubborn marks, areas that seem different.

Our aftercare plans

We believe a coating should be a relationship, not a transaction — so we are developing structured aftercare plans: scheduled maintenance washes and periodic coating inspections to keep your car performing as it should. TODO: owner to confirm aftercare plan structure and terms before publishing. In the meantime, every coating customer gets written aftercare instructions specific to the product applied.

Who this isn't for

If the fortnightly wash sounds like a chore you will never do, be honest about it before buying a coating. A neglected coating underperforms and can void its warranty. There is no shame in choosing a simpler sealant regime that matches how you actually treat your car — we would rather sell you the right product than the expensive one.

Questions, answered honestly

How often should I wash a ceramic coated car?
Every one to two weeks in normal use, more often in winter when road salt is about. The coating makes washing easier and quicker, but it still needs doing — contamination left for months will degrade even the best coating.

Can I use a pressure washer on a ceramic coated car?
Yes, with sense: keep a reasonable distance, use a wide fan pattern, and avoid blasting directly at panel edges, badges, and trim. A pressure washer is excellent for the pre-rinse stage that removes grit before any mitt touches the paint.

Do ceramic coatings need topping up?
Many do benefit from a periodic maintenance spray or topper — typically every few months — to refresh water behaviour. Use only products approved by your coating manufacturer or installer; unapproved products can interfere with the coating and may affect warranty terms.

Do you offer a maintenance or aftercare plan?
We are developing a structured aftercare plan for our coating customers — maintenance washes and periodic inspections to keep the coating performing. TODO: owner to confirm aftercare plan details and pricing structure before publishing.
