Ceramic coating warranty explained: what it covers, what voids it
The direct answer: a ceramic coating warranty usually covers the coating failing prematurely — not damage to your car. It is split between the product manufacturer's warranty and the installer's workmanship warranty, and both have conditions. For context on what a coating actually is and does, read our ceramic coating guide first.
TL;DR
- Two warranties exist: the product warranty (from the coating maker) and the workmanship warranty (from the installer).
- Warranties cover premature coating failure, not scratches, chips, or neglect.
- Maintenance conditions are real: automatic car washes and neglected washing commonly void claims.
- Get the terms in writing before you pay — a verbal "guaranteed for years" is worth nothing.
The two warranties
Product warranty. Issued by the coating manufacturer. It warrants that the coating, applied correctly, will perform as described for its rated life — gloss retention, water behaviour, chemical resistance. It is conditional on correct application by an accredited or approved installer, and often on registration of the job.
Workmanship warranty. Issued by the installer. It covers application defects: high spots, missed areas, improper prep, premature failure traceable to the installation. A good installer stands behind their prep work; this is often more valuable than the product warranty because most real-world problems are application problems.
What warranties typically cover
- Premature loss of gloss or hydrophobic behaviour under normal use.
- Coating failure caused by incorrect application (workmanship side).
- Peeling, flaking, or delamination that is not caused by damage or chemicals.
What warranties typically do NOT cover
- Scratches, swirl marks, stone chips, and road-rash — ceramic coating is not scratch-proof.
- Damage from accidents, vandalism, or impacts.
- Etching from bird droppings, tree sap, or bug splatter left on the paint for extended periods.
- Chemical damage from harsh cleaners, fallout, or industrial contamination.
- Panels that have been repainted or repaired after the coating was applied.
- Normal wear on high-contact areas (door edges, handles) beyond what the terms state.
What voids a warranty
Read the maintenance schedule in the terms; the common deal-breakers are:
- Automatic car washes — especially brush washes with aggressive chemicals. Most warranties require hand washing or touchless washes only.
- Neglect — leaving the car unwashed for months and then claiming the coating "stopped working".
- Wrong products — abrasive compounds, strong alkaline cleaners, or household chemicals on the paintwork.
- Unapproved top-ups — applying other products over the coating that the manufacturer has not approved.
- Missed inspections — some warranties require an annual check-up with the installer; missing one can void the remainder.
Questions to ask before you pay
- Is the warranty from you or the product manufacturer — or both?
- What exactly triggers a claim, and what is excluded?
- What maintenance am I required to do, and how often?
- Does the warranty need registration, and who does it?
- Is the warranty transferable if I sell the car?
- Can I have all of this in writing?
Any installer who is vague on these questions is telling you something.
Our warranty position
We will not invent warranty terms to make a sale. Our product and workmanship warranty details are being finalised — TODO: owner to confirm terms before publication. When you book with us, you will get the current terms in writing with your quote, including the maintenance conditions that keep the warranty valid. No verbal promises, no small print surprises.
Who this isn't for
If you plan to run the car through automatic brush washes weekly and never hand-wash it, a warranted ceramic coating is not a good buy — you will likely void the terms within months. A quality sealant and realistic expectations would serve you better.
